Real Estate Mentors Wanted: School Auction Championships 2018

Lindsay Warner, one of South Australia’s most experienced auctioneers and home marketing consultants, is seeking real estate agents and auctioneers to mentor students for this year’s Schools Auctioneering Championships.

The program uses the art of auctioneering to teach students in years 10, 11 and 12 about the real estate industry.

“It’s a fantastic way to introduce real estate as a career path, but it also assists students in learning life skills like public speaking, personal presentation and legal knowledge,” Lindsay says.

Born out of a marketing mishap in 2007, the competition is the first of its kind in the world.

“We had five South Australian schools compete in our first year. Last year we had 21. We’re now interstate and international. This program continues to grow and produce outstanding success stories,” Lindsay says.

This year’s competition will be in May.

Students will compete in South Australian heats, culminating in a state winner. Winners from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and New Zealand then battle it out in the International Schools Auction Challenge to be held in June.

Students taking part in the program earn credits towards their school requirements and have the opportunity to enter the real estate industry while studying.

“We have a student from Underdale High School who works for an agency two days a week. He’s gaining valuable experience and knowledge, school credits, and is getting paid like any other part-time job a student may have,” Lindsay says.

Mentors are required from the second week of the school term. They spend 45 minutes per week, for 12 weeks with students, teaching them about real estate and auctioneering.

Lindsay says the feedback he receives from mentors is always positive. “Mentors find by teaching their profession, they become better themselves. They enjoy the camaraderie, growth and improvement of the students, and the community involvement.”

“We want as many agents as possible involved, particularly in the northern suburbs where interest in the program is increasing.”

Agents and auctioneers interested in becoming mentors can contact Lindsay Warner on 0414 627 888.
