A Beginner’s Guide to Sewing Essentials
.

Like many others, you may have been one of those girls who have always wanted to create their own outfits. You can now learn all the basic tips, tricks and skills of sewing all with a little help from the internet. However, there are still some things that the internet cannot give you and that is the tools to create your masterpiece.

Here are some of the important tools that can help you get started with your first outfit:

Scissors

Fabric is a little difficult to cut when you compare it to paper. So, to get the perfect cuts, it is best to purchase a scissor that is specifically used to cut fabric. It is recommended to not use the same scissor you use to cut paper, as cutting paper can dull the blades of the scissor quickly. An 8-inch scissor is ideal for your sewing kit.

Measuring Tape

An essential in your sewing kit; a flexible measuring tape is required to take down all your measurements. Make sure to take down all the required measurements from the top to the bottom so you can determine how much material you will require as well. A 60-inch measuring tape is ideal.

Sewing Gauge

While you have already heard of a scissor and measuring tape being basic requirements to your sewing kit, you may be clueless as to what a sewing gauge is. A sewing gauge is a mini t-shaped square that consists of a sliding gauge. It allows you to measure the distance between one edge and another. It also comes in handy for creating an even hem on those fabrics you purchased from Boo! Design.

Thread Snips

While they aren’t an essential, they are certain to ease your work. Thread snips are used in snipping off those long threads and tails very close to your stitching. As you have to snip the threads after every sew, these will definitely come in use quite a lot.

Seam Ripper

A seam ripper is an essential if you are a beginner. It is a sharp hook that is used to easily tear threads. If you accidentally sew your sleeve shut, this tool would definitely come in handy. It is also good in opening button holes that have been sewn shut.

Sewing Machine

You need a sewing machine to help you design your first outfit. As you are just beginning, do not waste money getting the latest sewing machine. Simply borrow one from a family member or friend. If you are planning on taking up sewing in the long run, then you can consider purchasing a sewing machine.

Acrylic Ruler

An acrylic ruler is useful when cutting out small strips of fabric, keeping them straight and neat. It can also be used to obtain a scale of your sewing patterns.

With these essentials in hand, you are all set to creating your first masterpiece. Sewing can turn out to be your passion and it won’t hurt to learn to sew up those loose buttons and broken zippers while you are at it.
