1. Leaf Springs: These types of springs are ideal are the best if you plan on carrying heavy loads. The design resembles a leaf and is made up of multiple spring parts.
2. Coil Springs: If your focus is on ride quality and handling coil springs are the best. You can also increase load capacity with the right support.
3. Torsion Bars: Torsion bars are performance boosters. They significantly increase performance off and on-road.
The Shock Absorbers
Technically the shock absorbers don’t absorb any shock. They just limit the spring movement which in turn absorbs the shock.
What are the Different Types of 4x4 Systems?
There are 2 main types of suspension systems,
1. Solid Axle Suspension: These types of suspensions are found on both sides of the differential and joined together using axle housing. This connection makes it dependent, meaning that when one side moves up and down the other side will also be impacted.
Another name used for Solid Axle suspensions is live-axle systems. They are quite durable, and the traction increased is significantly more than the other types of systems.
2. IFS (Independent Suspension Systems): Just like the name suggests IFS does not have a direct connection between the sides. In the middle you’ll find an axle housing that features a ring gear and carrier live.
Unlike the axle tubes used in dependent systems, IFS use velocity axles so that the movement on one side doesn’t impact the other side of the vehicle.
